Malongo Coffee Machine Drip Tray

The drip tray is the part that sees water every day. We designed and printed a replacement that fits the Malongo machine it came off.

The brief

A drip tray on a Malongo machine that needed a replacement. The tray and the plate that drains into it, printed, and sitting on the same machine the original came off.

This is the tray itself, not a clip. The wider set of Malongo service parts is a separate piece of work.

The challenge

A tray that looks like a tray and does not sit in the machine is scrap. Water finds every gap.

  • The tray body has to match the opening it drops into
  • The drain plate has to pass water and still lift out for a clean
  • Food-adjacent plastic, so the material is chosen for the job
  • A print that holds when the tray is full, not only when it is empty on a desk

How we approached it

The tray and the plate were modelled as a pair. The star drain and the corner fasteners are the features that have to line up with the machine, not decoration.

The exploded view is the check: two pieces, one assembly, nothing guessed from a photograph of a closed tray.

What we built

A printed drip tray and drain plate for the Malongo machine, with the files for the next one. The photograph is the pair, opened so the drain is visible.

We do not publish how many trays Malongo has run from the file.

Results

The machine has a tray that fits. We do not publish Malongo's service volumes or a cost against the factory part.

A later break of the same tray starts from the file. The plate and the body stay a pair.
