Malongo Espresso Machine Lock - Batch Print

The small lock on the espresso machine kept breaking. We designed it again, then printed a batch so the next failure was already on the shelf.

Espresso machine lock

Engagement

Design, then a printed run

The brief

A lock on a Malongo espresso machine that kept failing. One reprint of one piece is a delay. The job was a model from the broken part, then a batch so the next break was already printed.

This is that lock, not the rest of the Malongo service set.

The challenge

A lock that is slightly wrong will close once and fail the second week. A batch of slightly wrong locks is a box of scrap.

  • Dimensions taken from a worn, broken piece
  • Tabs and the disc that have to survive a daily open and close
  • A print orientation that does not put the layer line on the hinge
  • Enough pieces in one run that the shop is not reprinting every time one snaps

How we approached it

The lock was drawn from the failed part: disc, tabs, and the heights that decide whether it sits in the machine. The drawing is the check before the bed is filled.

Then the batch. The same file, laid out as a set, so the next break comes off the shelf and not off a new print job.

What we built

A lock that fits the espresso machine, a dimensioned drawing, and a printed batch of that lock. The photograph is the run. The drawing is the part.

We do not publish how many locks were in the bed, or how often the original was failing.

Results

The shop has locks on the shelf. We do not publish Malongo's failure rate or a saving against the factory piece.

In use

A later batch is the same file on the same bed. The lock does not have to be remodelled because another one snapped.
